Three Blues (Tyra\'s Discovery)
Acrylic on Wood
24" x 12"
2019
During the summer of 2016, my friend Tyra and I spent a few days in Estes Park to hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. While I was painting along the stream in Moraine Park, Tyra went off to photograph. She came back happy as she had found a good number of blue butterflies further up. I had to move my painting position immediately to check them out. I took photographs and made some quick sketches. This painting was made from those references.
It really was a special discovery to find over a dozen of these diminutive creatures drinking, while holding ground with some pretty strong winds. The patterns are marvelous, too.
